Charity (Social) Distance Festival

Sat June 13 - Sat June 20 RaceJoy Ready
The Charity Distance Festival is going VIRTUAL!

For the past 4 years Fit & Able has invited you to be part of the Charity Distance Festival to support 6 to 8 area non-profits that provide important programs and services to our community. Unfortunately, they can't all have their own races to help raise support for their missions so Fit & Able stages the Charity Distance Festival to help them raise much needed revenue and provide them the opportunity to raise awareness about their efforts too.

This year we're doing something different.

First, we are focusing on one nonprofit, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, who is in desperate need of support to help those impacted most by the coronavirus.

Second, to keep everyone safe and away from large gatherings we are going VIRTUAL!

Therefore, this year we are putting the regular Charity Distance Festival on the shelf (don't worry, we are hopeful it will be back as usual next year!) and are proud to announce the . . .

Charity (Social) Distance Festival!

A Special Message from the Food Bank!
It's virtual so wherever you want! On the greenways, on your treadmill, around the family room... it's all good!

For ONE YEAR and ONE YEAR ONLY (hopefully) Fit & Able invites you to be part of the temporarily renamed Charity (Social) Distance Festival to support the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. And in the spirit of social distancing we are going VIRTUAL!

Rally for the Food Bank!

The Food Bank has provided food for our friends and neighbors facing hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina for 40 years and ranks in the top 15 nationally among 200 Feeding America food banks and first in North Carolina. Simply put, the Food Bank works every day to provide food to people in need while building solutions to end hunger in our communities with a network of more than 900 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through distribution facilities in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines), and Wilmington.

The Food Bank works across the food system to provide access to nutritious food that nourishes families, children, seniors, and individuals. Through partnerships, education, and programs, the Food Bank empowers communities to overcome hunger, creating an environment where all North Carolinians thrive.

590,320 People Face Hunger in Central & Eastern NC

68,633,529 Meals Served Last Year

“The need we’ve seen since the start of this crisis has been staggering. In addition to the more than 600,000 people facing hunger in our service area on a daily basis, we know even more people are now struggling economically and finding their way to our services for food. The community support has been amazing, and we’re so thankful - financial donations allow us to purchase food while the supply chain is challenged, and help us stay nimble and change our operations to keep people safe.”  -  Jessica Whichard VP of Development

You can learn more about the Food Bank's great work here:

To help the Food Bank feed the great numbers of people who have been economically impacted by the coronavirus crisis we are pledging $10 from EVERY 5K and 8K registration for the Charity (Social) Distance Festival! $10 provides 50 MEALS to families, children, and seniors facing food-insecurity or poverty. Our goal with the Charity (Social) Distance Festival is to provide at least 500,000 meals through registrations and donations and we need your help to achieve that goal.

Can you help us provide 500,000 meals to our fellow North Carolinians?

What is a Virtual Race?

A virtual race can be run (or walked) from any location you choose: on one of our suggested courses, on your favorite trail, or even from the comfort of your treadmill! You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself. We will offer safe options for picking up all your swag after the event or we can ship it directly to you!

It's a great way to be competitive with your family, friends, or co-workers and motivate each other to help those in need while not traveling to a race or be in large gatherings. Walk, run, roll, or stroll on a track, greenway, or treadmill or in a park or just around your neighborhood. Wherever you you want to run, let's get moving!

So, pick your distance – 1 Mile, 5K, or 8K! - then invite your friends and family to race with you! Don't forget! If you get 5 friends to join you using the referral link in your confirmation email you'll get an automatic $15 refund on your registration fee!

Wade Edwards Learning Lab (WELL) is also participating in this event to support its programs.

Meals Across America Challenge

Measured horizontally (from West Quoddy Head on the East Coast to Point Arena on the West Coast) the US is approximately 2,800 miles across. Get a team together to fun run or fund raise its way across the country to to help us reach our 500,000 meal goal.

When you create a Charity Race Team you will also be promoted to create a Fundraising Team too. As your team members report their results (must be verified!) we will add up their miles towards your goal. Well, you can do the math and see that it would take over 900 5Ks to complete 2,800 miles! But, good news! Each $1 you raise through your team fundraising page will also count towards your 2,800 mile goal.

The team that logs the most miles and raises the most money (but at least the 2,800 mile equivalent) will win a special team prize of $500 value!

Invite your friends and family to run together!
